A View from Sales: Turning Uncertainty into Action

Stephen Atkinson Global Head of Sales and Marketing

The common thread running through this Technical Spotlight is uncertainty.

Tax regimes change. Families move. Children settle in different countries. Wealth passes from one generation to the next. A structure that works well today may be tested very differently in five, 10 or 20 years.

For advisers, the answer is not to predict every eventuality. It is to plan for change from the outset.

That means asking broader questions. Where might the client live in future? Where are their children likely to settle? What happens if tax rules change? Can the structure move with the family? Can assets remain invested if circumstances change? And does the plan still work when wealth eventually passes to the next generation?

Brendan’s articles demonstrate why these questions matter. The implications of a planning decision may only become apparent when circumstances change, by which point the options available may be much more limited.

For advisers, there are some practical steps to consider now:

  • Look beyond the client’s current residence. Understand where they and the next generation could live in future.
  • Stress-test existing structures. Consider what happens if the client moves, the tax regime changes or a beneficiary becomes resident elsewhere.
Review older arrangements. A structure that was appropriate when established should not automatically be assumed to remain appropriate indefinitely.
  • Build flexibility into new planning. Where possible, consider whether arrangements can adapt if residence, regulation or family circumstances change.
  • Review before change happens. A planned relocation, retirement or transfer of wealth should trigger a conversation before the event, rather than afterwards.
  • Bring in specialist expertise early. Complex cross-border planning often spans several jurisdictions. Utmost’s technical, tax and legal specialists can work alongside advisers and their clients’ professional advisers to explore the implications and identify appropriate solutions.
  • Consider the role of insurance-based wealth solutions. Where portability, tax deferral, succession planning and long-term investment flexibility are important, Utmost solutions may form part of the planning conversation.

Ultimately, good international wealth planning is not about finding a structure that works today and leaving it untouched. It is about creating a plan with the flexibility to respond when circumstances change.

That, for me, is the real value of planning for uncertainty.
